Rereading the slightly crumpled letter for the third time this morning, Verity finished packing up her bag and took out the trash from her small, cramped apartment for the last time. It had been a rental for working at BreedCorp, a perk of being an employee at the rather large and gross new business enterprise based in New Bark Town, Johto. But after today, Verity Lanellea Weathers was setting off for a long journey in the Johto region, filled with adventure and exciting unknown experiences galore. Leaving the housekey under the doormat for her landlord to collect later, Verity called out and a tiny Meowth darted forward from a crevice, a nearby alleyway. The neighborhood kitty smiled and mewed and Verity gave the precious Pokemon one last tin of shredded Magikarp before saying goodbye and heading off. Maybe she'd return someday, maybe not, it didn't really matter all that much to the purple haired girl. Living here had given her job security and a greater chance at becoming an aide to the famed Pokemon Professor, Professor Elm, but she had not special attachment to this runaway salvation place which was neither her hometown nor her dream city.
The young girl passed through yet another neighborhood filled with mediocre houses and - surprisingly - one very large, very extravagant mansion adorned with a magnificent, swirling letter P on the front gate. A fountain roared behind closed, barred gates almost as tall as the house itself and impossible to scale and the polished windows gleamed as a staff hurried about, mowing the lawn, clipping hedges, carrying teapots, weeding gardens, and scrubbing the driveway with a toothbrush. The girl heard a snatch of exchanged comments between staff for a moment, something about a visiting "Master" but she couldn't make anything more out before they soon departed back to work. Verity wondered for a moment who might live in such a home but shook her head of the thought and quickly turned away, continuing her walk to the Professor's laboratory. It took a little while longer but finally she arrived at Elm's lab. Walking almost the entire length, the small town seemed much large than she had realized before. Walking inside the building briskly, the automatic doors slid open and shut and dinged to signify a new arrival to the lab. Verity Weathers held out her letter in front of her and looked around expectantly and called out, "Professor Elm? Hello? Good morning!"

MDF: A man came out from the back room of the library and looked around for who called him. He approached the girl without saying a word and took the letter form her hands. He looked it over and made a few grunts like most middle-aged men did when they were concentrating.
"Ah." He said, "Verity Weathers." He mumbled to himself. It seemed he was still a bit tired from working all night. He tried his best to give her an energetic smile and he replaced the letter in her hands. He led the girl silently into the back room. Two automatic doors slid open after the professor placed his hand on a scanner. "Come with me." he told her and walked forward into a massive room filled with shelves that were full of pokeballs. In the center of the lab was a large computer with a hand scanner. "Place your hand on the scanner and the monitor will tell you your choices." He smiled. He was very proud of his computer system although he was the last professor in any region to stop giving out the traditional starters and use the hand scanners.

Verity paused for a moment before continuing and nodded, walking forward. She stepped lightly and carefully and was a bit nervous. She knew of this scanning process, of course, having been well-informed from neighbor's reviews and online forum discussions on the topic, trying to learn as much as she could about the starter selection system as she could before using it herself. The girl closed her eyes and raised her left hand onto the scanner slowly, not hesitant but purposefully calm. Verity nodded and pursed her lips, which curled into a smile quickly, as she opened her eyes and waited for her starter selection choices. She held her breath for a moment in eager anticipation.

MDF: As the machine quickly scanned Verity's hand on the x and y axis, another scanner emerged from the top of the square and scanned the z-axis. The scanner used the 3D model of the hand to analyze her pulse and hormones in her blood. Quickly measuring all of these things could give a rough identifier of her personality and which pokemon would best match. The machine stopped scanning and the moniter turned on.
The screen displayed a loading screen depicting a magikarp flopping around helplessly. As the screen loaded, a claw-like device dropped down from the ceiling. It looked like those skill-crane games at carnivals. It quickly retrieved a pokeball, and as it put it in the first slot of the machine, the computer screen displayed the first choice. Zubat. It rotated on the screen as it displayed stats for a few moments before it moved to the side and the next choice was dropped in and displayed on the screen. This time was a Slowpoke. After a few more moments the machine dropped in another pokeball and ascended back to the ceiling. The last choice was a Glameow.

The wait was agonizing but interesting as she watched the process of the hand scanner and its loading process was a bit entertaining for a moment. Verity looked over her choices for a short time and then finally decided, eagerly, which option she wanted. Pressing the rightmost option, Verity prepared for the machine to deposit her new choice and wondered what advice the Professor might give to her before she departed on her journey. She smiled one last time at the image on the screen, confident in her choice. Her new Glameow would be the best Pokemon starter ever, she was positive.

MDF: "Excellent choice!" He told Verity before turning a key in the computer and shutting the lab down. He didn't want any of his curious assistants to fiddle with the machine. They were quite childish and liked to use the machine like some sort of personality test! "Here, pick out a pokedex." He said from the other side of the room. It is unclear how he got there so fast, maybe there was still a lot of youth in the older man after all. He pointed to a table covered by a glass display case that had a bunch of small devices in it. There were pokedexes of all colors, and before the girl made her decision he types in a code to open up a small window in the center of the case.

Verity was eager to meet her chosen starter but Professor Elm seemed to have something else in mind first. Locking down the scanner and bounding across the room at a ridiculous pace, he reached a glass display case full of Pokedexes and, opening it up, asked Verity to select a model. Verity's fingers glided over the clear glass and she peered down excitedly. She quickly found what she was looking for: a bright, royal purple color the same color as her mother's hair, her hair. This purple was her favorite color and she eagerly reached her left arm downward and picked up the device. It seemed new but she couldn't be certain and it certainly appeared to look just as ordinary as the other devices. "I'll take this Pokedex, thanks, Professor," she smiled happily, waiting expectantly in case the Professor had anything else to add.

Jaden was abruptly woken up by the drunken hammering of the man next door. He knew it was a terrible idea to rent a room in town so close to a bar, especially one this filthy, but it was cheap and he would need every penny he saved up for this journey. The boy rose from the bed and looked out the window, only to realize he had yet to get dressed. He quickly picked up his clothes from the floor, pulled up his pants, and threw on a shirt. It was right when he was about to step out the door that he noticed the letter for the second time this trip right where he had pinned it. The letter was crumpled and beaten, but it was saved and stapled to his two other letters of rejection and stapled onto the door. Jaden ripped them down and stuffed them into a side pocket of his backpack, making his way out and fixing his bedhead on the way down the elevator.
He wasn't sure if he was late or incredibly early, but once he arrived at the lab there was only one other person there. She was receiving a Pokemon at the time and was clearly busy. But, being the boy that he was, Jaden could not help but interupt.
"Yo, guys. I'm here to pick up a partner?" he said, almost asking to annoy anyone in the room. The boy scratched the back of his head, quickly realizing how out of place he was.

MDF: Professor Elm simply smiled at her choice and relocked the cabinet. He wished her good luck and walked over to a boy about the same age as Verity. He was also here for a starter pokemon!
Spesh: "Hello!" Professor Elm greeted and then quickly swiped the letter from Jaden. He read it over rather speedily and then shoved it back to the boy. He clearly had more energy now than when he was talking to Verity. "So you're Jaden?" He asked rhetorically, and then made a motion for the boy to follow. He took him into the room with the sliding doors that had the giant claw and the computer. "Place your hand on the scanner and the wonderclaw(trademarked) will descend and retrieve your choices from these shelves." He smiled and then motioned towards the towering shelves filled with pokeballs as far as the room expanded.

Jaden rushed forward to the scanner and pressed his palm on the glass, assuming that the amount of pressure added would increase his odds at getting what he wanted or something. The screen changed almost instantly to a loading bar, which was soon followed by the appearance of three Pokemon. One, a cute little Buneary, fully ready to be cuddled. Jaden pushed that idea out of his head. Cute wasn't his style, and that would be the same reason he passed by the Eevee in the next slide. Then, the Torchic popped onto the screen. It hopped around carefully, aware of its surroundings and easily ready to fight. The boy recalled the small amounts of information he retained from school and thought about Blaziken, its final form, and how great it would be to have one on his team.
"This one," Jaden said confidently, "I want this one."

Spesh: "You want Torchic?" The Professor asked, but then before waiting for an answer he grabbed the pokeball and handed it to Jaden. Professor Elm looked surprised that the boy was lucky enough to receive an Eevee as a starter choice and didn't pick it. That pokemon was very popular with the younger crowd. He wasn't complaining, however, as Torchic was a great pokemon and seemed to match the boy perfectly. "Come with me and choose a pokedex!" Elm shouted as he almost ran to the display case on the other side of the automatic doors. He typed the code in and then beckoned for Jaden to come closer and choose.

Verity watched as another kid entered the lab and interrupted her and the Professor. Elm left to go help the boy with his starter selection process and Verity stayed, now left all alone. She noticed that the boy was quite tall, handsome, and confident and he was also rather adorable. She blushed and decided to think about something else. Her cheeks returned to their normal tone as she reached down and carefully cradled the Pokeball the Professor had just given her in her hands. Of course, the ugly red-and-white design would have to go. Either she'd figure out a way to transfer the Pokemon inside at some point or she'd spray paint the Pokeball herself, anything to make it resemble the prestigious and simple beauty of the Premier Ball, the only capture device she deemed worthy of holding her Pokemon. Regardless, the sphere had a beauty all its own as it sparkled and reflected all the light from the lab around it, swrling into red and white halves and mirroring images just as it reflected light from the outside world. Calling upon her bravery, Verity held her breath for a moment and readied herself for this important moment and then...she pushed the large white button on the front.
In a burst of dazzling light (so bright, Verity shielded her eyes with her forearm to adjust), the Pokeball exploded and the glowing form began to solidy as the harsh light died down and color became apparent on the newly appeared creature. This Pokemon was fairly cute, fluffy, gray and white, and looked curious. The kitten looked around, eyes wide in wonderment, and met his eyes with those of Verity. The kitty mewed a bit and Verity giggled. Though a different species, his seemingly smart nature and basic features reminded the purple haired girl of the neighborhood Meowth she'd just left a tin of food. In fact, it had been her last tin of the sort but if she'd realized she would be choosing a cat Pokemon as a starter today, she would have brought along more...though maybe a canned fish of more expensive taste than a Magikarp for her own partner, most likely. The tom cat looked up with wide eyes still, unblinking, and held up a paw. Verity leaned down and shook hands with her new (and highly polite) Pokemon friend and admired his curling, bobbing tail. The girl smiled and hoped the Pokemon was as strong as it was cute. Then she realized something with a start, "The Pokedex! I almost forgot, I have to scan you! Hold still, Glameow, alright?"
The girl held out the Pokedex toward her new Pokemon and it took a quick snapshot, scanned for a moment, and then declared, using a very formal diction but an Australian accent, "Glameow, the Catty Pokemon. Glameow tends to be spiteful and fickle, having a tendency to hook its claws into the nose of its trainer if it's not fed. When this Normal type Pokemon is happy, it demonstrates movements with its tail, like a dancing ribbon. Its eyes are also capable of using hypnotic powers. As it has a domesticated quality, it tends to appear in urban areas." Verity scanned through information and found a section on the names of Glameow in different languages. It was then that inspiration struck and the girl decided to name all of her Pokemon after the names used in various languages. Not only were names personal and cute, these would be unique and often wouldn't allow opponents the satisfaction of knowing what opponent they would be facing next until the last moment. "How about I call you Nyarumaa?" Glameow purred and nodded, saying her species name a few times and managing once to mew in a manner that sounded similar to the name which Japanese people dubbed her species. Verity smiled, content with how this first meeting had gone. Now all that was next was to leave.
But she decided to hang back, sitting down with her new Glameow to talk in a waiting room sitting chair and flipping through magazines together, hoping to catch the cute boy next and wondering if he might want to talk. It seemed rather cliche (by which, Verity understood it was a stereotype propagated by every single cheesy Pokemon adventure television program she'd ever watched) but often the first person a trainer ever met either became their rival or their best friend and traveling companion. Eager and excited for either, the girl could hardly contain herself as the boy, Jaden, was now selecting his Pokedex and would be not too long from now. The girl contained her excitement, however, and continued looking at the magazines, staring at a breathtakingly beautiful gown that Nyarumaa (who had the nicknames Nyaru and Nya by now) had pointed out.

"Thanks Professor," Jaden said, rushing into the room and grabbing the first Pokedex he saw. The device really made no difference to him. It was just another piece of technology that he would have to worry about and something that could just cause him confusion down the road. He stuffed it into his back pocket and held his hand up to high-five Elm, but quickly realized it was inappropriate and went in for a handshake instead. Jaden stuffed his hand in his pocket and left the room, rotating the minimized Pokeball he had just received in his hand.
"So what the hell are you gonna look like?" he asked himself, accidentally pressing the center button while playing with it and releasing the Torchic. The shock from the Pokeball releasing his Pokemon followed by the excited leap of Torchic caught him off guard and knocked him straight off his feet. At about the same time he noticed the girl sitting on the bench not to far from him. Jaden scratched back of his head, obviously embarassed, "Well, hello. I guess Pokemon aren't quite as easy to handle as you would think?"
