Hmmm, perhaps I was too rash, I thought we had come to an agreement with the names to an extent. Should I take down the poll then?
And then from here if we go on without magical creatures as the names of houses and we don't go for names of the original Salem witches, are we just making up random people that we claim founded the houses? Or could we maybe just take famous people from Muggle history and claim they were also profound wizards and witches, ehehe? The only thing I wonder with naming houses after a particular person is why we really need a founder that particularly favored their own house in general. It worked for Hogwarts of course but I don't seem why it would have to be a common trait shared with Salem. Oh well, I seem to be the minority dissenter in this instance so ignore my skepticism~ Is the famous people of the Muggle and magical worlds thing a good compromise idea then?

I am terrible for saying this this late in the game, but we could, of course, solve all this by simply...not having houses. Would that be so inconceivable? Every year, students could change dorms (like in college), and get to live with and study with different people for each year, ensuring mingling between students of all sorts.

That's definitely an interesting concept. I suppose that yes we could do that. Actually wouldn't it be fun if they could choose where they went and there were like fairs or something where each dorm tried to sell itself? And they went out of their way to look cool for prospective students each year? If we did something like that though there would have to be a few students that stayed in one dorm for the full four years.

I guess it's possible but I really like the idea of houses existing but being...different. But if we do that, it wouldn't be too bad~ Either way, I like the idea of the founders being unexpected American Muggle heroes like Abraham Lincoln or Harriet Tubman or Davey Crockett or Amelia Earhart or Thomas Edison. Also it would just be really cool in general if even if some of these people weren't chosen if they were alums or secret wizards anyway ehehe~

Well, I was in favor of having the school be separated in houses, maybe a mix of what we're doing? Have them named after famous wizards, probably its founders like Hogwarts? But I guess In that case the wizards would have to be made up characters for the RP. Or maybe we could follow mdf's idea and have famous american people to be those founders/famous wizards? In any case I think that if we had houses, the poll should continue to select the beasts that would, in this case, be like the mascots of the houses.
Of course, if in the end everyone decides to keep the school without houses I wouldn't mind, I'd follow what the group decides in the end.

Well, if we have each dorm serve as a "house" in a sense (i.e. what makes each dorm unique? what kind of atmosphere and community does it promote?), maybe that could work? So students wouldn't belong to any one "house" for their seven years at Salem: rather, each year, when they switch dorms (and honestly I think for this, the best way is to just randomize who gets sent where), they enter the new "house" and community of their new dorm.
Does that make any sense? Making the "houses" a result of the physical living space, rather than having a living space for each house?
Also, blasphemy! How could you have a list of American heroes and forget George Washington!?

Hmm I guess that could work just as well, and that way we take off a huge load about creating a backstory for each "house" and just create a brief summary of why each dorm has selected said beast as their banner. Yeah, I like that option better.

Hey guys! Hasn't been much activity on this thread, so I thought I would say something. Have we decided on houses then from the vote, or are people still in the process of voting?

I think there was some debate over exactly what we wanted the houses to be named after, and it never got settled since we were all pushing for different ideas (thus my no-house suggestion).

I think it'd be a cool idea. I think I remember saying that earlier. And yeah we could avoid a lot of the issues. Since I really just want to get this thing going, maybe it would be a good idea to just simply rid ourselves of the house factor and go with a sort of free-for-all-you're-welcome-to-choose. But only if everyone else is cool with it.

I still like the idea of houses but I think Wyndi's suggestion is a good one. If anyone's ever seen To the Beautiful You (it's a kdrama adaptation of Hana-Kimi), I just started it yesterday and it reminded me of how they have three dormitories and each has a leader and the dormitories have no set traits or anything, just intense loyalty and pride for their own dorms and all have a mascot and compete against the students in other dorms, which seem randomly assigned from what I can tell. So what does everyone else think about Wyndi's idea of having the "houses" decided based on occupants, rather than occupancy deciding on student traits and such? They could all have things in common but it could be more of a free-for-all?

Free-for-all is the ultimate American way!

I do like the idea of having dorms instead of houses, and like you mentioned, each dorm to have their leader, probably an NPC or one of the RP mods would be best, and to have them being occupied by students decision rather than a hat or other sorts, its very appealing to me, I support that option.
