Okay good point. Makes sense to me.

I'm fine with general magic and wandwork being universal, but I would imagine that cultures would have also developed certain areas of magic that were specific to them, whether that's due to the beliefs and interests of their culture, or simply because there's no (translatable) equivalent in other cultures. If there are culturally speciic things in other areas of culture (e.g. musical instruments, art forms, etc.), why wouldn't the same be true of magic? Yes, in the end the wizard is the conduit, but the culture of the wizard would no doubt influence what the magic is used for.

That's true. I'm not really sure how exactly it would carry over to magic though. Do you have an example?

Not many off the top of my head - I was just thinking about specializations of magic that focused on something unique to a culture. What about the yin and yang forces actually being a branch of magical study or an intrinsic component of Chinese magic? Magic that works with dragons (since Eastern Asia sees dragons as benevolent and esteemed) rather than against them (as we see with European magic)?

That's actually a good idea, I like it. But of course, those branches of magic seem to mostly be things unrelated to wandwork and spellcasting, same as concepts like Ancient Runes and Divination~ Sounds like a great idea~ But we still have yet to actually decide which specific school we'd choose? I assume it would have to be one of the known ones (not a random one) but it doesn't really need more than a location and name to be something interesting to explore and create for worldbuilding~

haha yeah, this is all just speculation! Technically, we haven't even decided on what kind of HP roleplay we'd like to do. So far, the options on the table are:
- post-BoH (1998) - next-gen (circa 2017) - Founders era (tenth century) - foreign schools (present?)

Wow ok this has exploded since I have been around! Hooray!!
I'm so excited we're talking about HP-verse roleplays, too. I was heavily debating even starting one since I wasn't sure who would even be up for it (besides myself and wyndi) so this makes me very happy. Lots of points have been discussed too and I'm just gonna go ahead and not over-reiterate. I would personally love a post-BoH, or a present foreign school roleplay (ie Beauxbatons) since we'd have a little more leeway in what could be considered canon and what isn't. Figuring out houses might be a little tough since we're all more familiar with the Hogwarts houses, of course.

We could also assume though that there aren't houses in the other schools, although I would prefer a house system.

That's a good point. I personally adore the fanfiction accounts of G Norman Lippert's James Potter series and for Alma Aleron (AAU) in the states, he used a house system but they were based on American fraternities and there were six - Pixie, Zombie, Vampire, Igor, Werewolf, and Bigfoot - and instead of being sorted, you could ask the administrative Kneazle, Patches, for a recommendation but regardless could pledge to whichever house you wished and those that didn't choose or make it through pledging were randomly assigned. Not that we'd use this system but it's just an example, we can do whatever we like (though it should be fitting to the culture of the area.

Yeah! So actually what I'm getting from all these comments is there's confusion on how culture will come into the world of magic. What we should really do first if we've decided we want to try a foreign school RP is to pick a school so we know where to start. Then we can start assigning the small things like how the house system works and how magic is cast and what kind of magic they specialize in because we'll know what culture we're working with.

So really what we should do is make an executive decision on what kind of RP we'd like to see in the first place, no? lol

Yeah basically. Idk how that works, so I'll bow out here.

It's...not a formal, seniors-only process? lol. Just say which RP(s) you'd like to do most given the circumstances, and I guess the majority will win in this case. We can shelve the losing options for a later time.

Then I choose foreign schools.

Foreign schools could definitely be fun! I'm also really feeling up to a post-BoH.
