hey!
just wondering what the rules are regarding graphic/mature/explicit/18+/blood/gore/etc. content is within the context of a roleplay? for instance, if i wanted to set up a roleplay in a darker universe w forces at play suitable for mature audiences (or rather, not necessarily for younger audiences), would i be able to do that or nah?

mdf2711 will be able to give you a more detailed answer, but I think the most recent ruling was that we decided to keep the permissible roleplay rating PG-15/PG-16 and under. We do have younger members around, and there would be no way to keep them out of a more "mature" roleplay.

Wyndi is mostly correct. I would have to find the chats and confirm but I think it was actually PG-13 and even if it was not, it probably should be something to keep in mind because since COPPA of '98, it's been a federal US law (and has been essentially respected internationally because the Internet is not subdivided like real territory) that children under the age of 13 are allowed to use certain sites with parent's permission and things like that but most sites discourage children under 13 from using their services altogether, including most forums like Proboards (our host) for legal and financial reasons. For this reason, I'd say that most content should be screened for appropriate viewing.
However, once there was a thread on Vdex and I remember vividly that the RPers wished for their characters to engage in sex at some point and it was decided that to keep the thread clean and appropriate and not PO mods or break the rules, they set up an off-site forum for use in situations which got even above a simple M rating.
Anyway, what I'm saying here is that you might want to simply rate it in the title and at the top so it is visible and obvious to anyone viewing and they have legitimate warning that there is graphic, possibly too mature or explicit content contained within that they do not wish to view. A simple "RP Thread, TW: Graphic Content, Mature Themes" or something of a similar nature ("RP Thread, NSFW" or "RP Thread, Rated M and above") should suffice nicely.
I just don't want to discourage you from RPing here, please don't feel that way but I hope you understand why I'm trying to be specific in warning you that it should be obviously tagged as such (in both the OOC and RP threads) and should not break any of the rules while at the same time maintaining an independent, fair warning to dark or intense themes. Thanks for asking and being sure to check first though, makes me super happy~!

So to clarify for future reference: a roleplay that exceeds the PG-13 rating is permissible if it's explicitly labeled as such?

I ran a RP with body horror content (looks away from Gridlock Asylum oh) and it passed because it wasn't, uh, quite graphic. Extra limbs and such, buh buh. Tbh Wyndi I'd assume as thus unless we get word from Supreme Overlord Jaime that it won't pass- for users to join such RPs then would be 'at their own risk', etc.

Yeah, Alterity has already had some minor blood content to boot and I plan on only amping up the blood and injury and death as it goes on tbh. But it will be probably approached in a way that would likely be no more violent than a traumatic and cliche death of a parent in a Disney movie. Same with the Petalburg catastrophe in Heresy with massive death pillars but it wasn't too violent in its representation, not as much as it could have been.
But if you're planning on getting really gory, tearing off limbs or committing mutilation or torture or extensive pain-inducing or something that should respectfully be tagged as a tw/trigger warning (common ones include suicide, self harm, sex, etc) then that should be tagged clearly. If someone happens upon it and it's rated appropriately and they are offended, it really should come as no surprise to them and I can't find a reason to fault anyone for such an RP existing. Of course, this is all as long as everything is within reason still, as advised above and here again~

Stickied this thread too, for newer users looking into checking out graphic content of their RPs.
